This day has to be the best ride ever. I can't think of any better. A down right cold start along the ocean (53), wound up, over, down, around mountains on some of the twistiest roads, through more redwoods over and around Crater Lake and down to US 97 where the temp reached 90. The variations in scenery were simply hard to believe. The pictures don't do it justice. Northern California and Oregon are worth the time to ride ... on or in anything.Again, the map doesn't show enough detail so ... we continued up 101 from Fortuna, CA and in Eureka hung a right on US 199 to Grants Pass, OR, went south on I-5 to OR 234 to OR 62 to Crater Lake, took the west rim drive to OR 138 to US 97 to Bend, OR.
We hit a fair amount of construction along US 199 and it was a bother because sometimes we had to stop on some pretty tricky hills and turns. Yesterday I failed to really say anything about the redwoods. They are some big trees and the forests are thick. I can see why no one has found ol' Sasquatch.
Noted that there are lots and lots of hikers/hitchhikers along 101 and 199. They have backpacks and seem to be just wandering. When I stopped one time to get a drink a fella came up to me and asked where the nearest food store was ... uh, maybe 3 days thata way ... those leaves and berries over there don't look too bad.
Crater Lake is a pretty awesome site and is well worth the visit. I think I read where it is the 7th or 9th deepest lake in the world at 1900+ feet ... not unlike the Chesapeake.
Tomorrow is off to Idaho.
